Climate-driven disasters are radically altering a crucial source of financial stability: home insurance. As premiums skyrocket and insurance companies walk away from entire communities, a financial product that was once taken for granted is now sounding the alarm bell about the financial threat of climate change to households and the economy. At the same time, insurance could also become a crucial lever, as the underwriting and investments insurers provide could be a crucial catalyst for clean energy and climate adaptation. Harnessing this potential, while protecting vulnerable communities, necessitates a new policy direction.
Public Citizen is a leading progressive voice in the fight for climate-focused insurance reforms. Through this remote internship, interns support Public Citizen’s advocacy while they hone their research, writing and presentation skills.
Candidates must be intellectually curious and self-driven with excellent persuasive writing skills. No prior subject matter knowledge is required, but a strong candidates will be eager to (1) quickly synthesize new, complex materials and (2) explain it to a broader audience. A demonstrated interest in progressive advocacy is preferred, and candidates should be sensitive to the needs of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds and orientations.
Intern responsibilities include a combination of the following:
- Drafting materials for the Public Citizen website.
- Drafting and presenting research memos to support policy recommendations.
- Monitoring relevant news, legislation and events.

The paid application deadline remains open for fall 2026. Public Citizen offers both paid and unpaid internships based on financial need and funding availability. Interns who are approved for funding will be paid on an hourly basis at $17.95 per hour with a total internship duration of no more than 320 hours.
