Academic Programs Related to Academia & Higher Ed
This tool is intended to serve as a helpful starting point for exploring UM’s academic programs that could lead to careers in higher ed. Please refer to the University of Montana Academic Catalog – the official source of all UM academic program information – for the most current, complete, and accurate content.
- M.Ed. in Higher Education Administration – Prepares for leadership and faculty roles in higher ed through advanced research and administration training.
- Master of Public Administration (MPA) – Montana’s only accredited MPA program, offering flexible graduate credentials (online/in-person) in public and nonprofit sectors.
- M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction – Offers licensure pathways and non-licensure options focused on curriculum studies, special education, literacy, and library media.
- Ed.D. in Educational Leadership (Ph.D. by Inquiry) – Terminal doctorate preparing professionals for faculty and leadership positions in higher education or P–12 schools.
- All Graduate Programs at UM – Generally speaking, most Ph.D. programs are geared toward those who wish to pursue a career as a researcher, professor, or teacher in a post-secondary educational institution. Some programs also lead to practical or clinical career options outside of academia. Most master’s degrees prepare graduates for roles outside of academia, though a master’s degree may be accepted for some teaching roles at community colleges or staff positions at four-year universities. If considering a degree program, consult with the staff and faculty in that program to determine if it is the correct degree to lead you in your desired career direction.
